Press release, 5 June 2014
According to the most recent study, Elisa's 4G LTE network has the widest coverage in Finland. Using 4G LTE connections, data transfer is easier and even faster than using a wired broadband connection.
European Communications Engineering Ltd (ECE), an independent research company, has been studying the coverage of Finnish 3G networks since 2008. In spring 2014, the study focused on high-speed 4G LTE networks. According to the study, conducted in more than 30 of Finland’s largest towns and along road sections between them in March–April, Elisa's 4G LTE network has the widest coverage. The study reveals that the coverage of the Elisa LTE network is 30–50% wider than the coverage of other operators.
"There are still differences in data services between different operators. Elisa's 4G LTE network has significantly better coverage. Generally speaking, LTE coverage is expanding rapidly in Finland, and the data rates experienced by customers are developing all the time," says Jukka Lempiäinen, President & CEO of ECE.
More and more Finnish people are benefitting from the rapid progress of 4G LTE networks because more than half of all mobile phones sold support 4G LTE connections, and their number is rapidly increasing. Mobile data is also increasingly being used with computers and tablets.
"4G LTE technology enables even higher data transfer rates, having an impact on how people listen to music, watch movies and play online games. Fast connections also make remote working easier as fast 4G LTE connections allow even larger files to be transferred and videoconferences to be organised without any delay," says Matias Castrén, Elisa's Business Director.
Every year, Elisa invests more than 200 million euros in total, the majority of which is used in developing networks. The largest investment concerns the rapid construction of the 4G LTE network at the new 800 MHz frequency, also covering sparsely populated areas. The construction project has proceeded quickly this year, with Elisa's fast 4G LTE connections being available in more than 230 municipalities.
"Even though the latest study showed excellent results for us, we are determined to develop our network even further. Our objective is to get the coverage of the 4G network to at least the same level as the current 3G network," Castrén says.
